Anton “Tony” Hufnagel, 83, of Napanoch, New York, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 26, 2026. Loving husband of 43 years to Barbara (Schlichthernlein) Hufnagel; devoted father to Victoria (Paschal) Holcomb, Christopher (Kendra) Hufnagel, Sarah (Rex) Zimmer, Gregory (Heather) Hufnagel and Kimberly (Jeff) Motala; son of the late Joseph and Victoria Hufnagel; loving grandfather to Aubrey, Derek, Lukas, Adeline, Wren, Michael, Stephanie, Julia, and Ryan; brother to Elizabeth (Buddy) Metzler and the late Joseph Hufnagel; Uncle to niece Michelle Metzler and many other nieces and nephews.
Originally from Shenorock, New York, Tony lived a life defined by hard work, integrity, resilience, and an unwavering devotion to his family.
A man of remarkable intelligence and resourcefulness, Tony was a telecommunications engineer for NYNEX and Bell Atlantic, now Verizon. He earned a bachelor's degree in English from the University of Iowa and brought a lifelong curiosity, creativity, and skill to everything he did. Whether building a house, tackling an outdoor project, helping a neighbor, or repairing something others might have considered beyond fixing, Tony took pride in doing things well. He believed in hard work, keeping one's word, showing up early, and never taking shortcuts.
Beyond his many talents, Tony possessed a personality that left a lasting impression. He could be a sharp-witted jokester one moment and a patient, comforting listener the next. He knew when to stand his ground and when to offer a gentle hand, and he had a way of making people feel welcomed, respected, and encouraged to be their best. He admired craftsmanship, respected those who worked hard, and believed that much could be learned by simply paying attention.
Nature and wildlife held a special place in Tony's heart. He found joy in gardening, hunting, target shooting, and the quiet satisfaction of working outdoors. An exacting marksman, he appreciated precision and skill in all their forms. He also loved watching his beloved New York Yankees, listening to classical and German music, and cooking, much of which he learned from his mother. Spending time in the woods, family vacations, Thanksgiving traditions, and holidays in the Catskill Mountains created cherished memories that his family will carry forward.
Above all, family was the center of Tony's life. He worked tirelessly to provide security, stability, and opportunity for those he loved, and he took great pride in caring for them. Becoming a grandfather brought him another generation to love, teach, and share memories with. Through his example, he taught his family to be independent, resourceful, honest, and resilient; to fix what could be fixed, to do a job right the first time, to find joy in life's simple pleasures, and to honor the commitments they made.
Tony also demonstrated extraordinary strength throughout decades of health challenges, meeting adversity with a resilience that reflected the very values he lived by. He was, in every sense, a warrior. His determination, devotion, and enduring love were a testament to the strength of his character.
Tony leaves behind a legacy far greater than the homes he built or the things he repaired. He leaves the values he instilled, the knowledge he shared, the laughter he sparked, the memories he created, and the example he set. His influence will live on through his family and the generations to come, in the work they do, the promises they keep, the way they care for one another, and the respect they show the world around them. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Family will be present to receive friends on Saturday, November 7th, 2026, from 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM at Loucks Funeral Home, 79 North Main Street, Ellenville, NY 12428. A funeral home service will take place at 3:15 PM.
A private burial will take place Sunday morning, November 8th, 2026, at Furman Cemetery.
From all of us at Loucks Funeral Home, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the Hufnagel family and to all who loved Tony. We are honored to care for his family as they remember and celebrate his life. May the stories you share, the laughter remembered, and the love you carry for him bring comfort in the days ahead.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
