Obituary

Gladys Irma Geary, of Wawarsing, NY, died in the Lord peacefully in her home on August 4, 2026. In attendance was her son, Guy Morgan Geary who was her faithful and attentive caregiver. She was 98.

Gladys Irma Morgan was born on March 26, 1928 in Bloomingburg, NY to the late Alonzo and Dorothy Adams Morgan. She graduated from Middletown High School in 1946. She studied nursing and assisted a local doctor for several years. She met John F. Geary of Wawarsing, NY and they were married on June 18, 1950. They built a home together in Wawarsing where they raised three children: a daughter, Deborah Lynn (Johnson) of Gresham, OR; and twin boys, Guy Morgan of Wawarsing, NY, and Gregg Sherman of La Habra, CA.

Gladys was blessed with a long life full of varied interests and activities. She was a devoted mother and homemaker, who, like her husband, was also civic minded. She joined in many community activities and provided leadership in several of them. She loved camping and the great outdoors. She was a long time member of the Wawarsing Sportsmen's Association and taught snowmobile safety classes there. She was a member and past president of the Shawangunk Garden Club. She was an avid traveler visiting all 50 states, Canada, Mexico, and several European countries. Gladys loved music and had a fine singing voice. She was often asked to perform solos. She sang in church choirs from childhood into her 80s. She was a member of the Shawangunk Choraliers performing at the Empire State Music Festival under the direction of such notables as Leopold Stokowski. She also played the piano and organ. She was the organist and choir director for the Napanoch United Methodist church for many years. She was also the musician for the Ellenville Order of the Eastern Star. She was an avid reader with an interest in history and historical novels. She loved animals and had a particular fondness for dachshunds, a number of whom shared her home from childhood into her golden years.

She leaves behind her daughter, Deborah; twin sons, Guy and Gregg; two grandchildren, Erin (Johnson) Woodard, and Ian Johnson; and five great-grandchildren, Noah and Hudson Woodard, and Liam, Maisy, and Beck Johnson. She is preceded in death by her husband, John. She will be remembered fondly for her love of flowers and gardens in addition to her legacy of music that now actively engages four generations of her family.

A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday October 17 at 3 p.m. at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, 68 Clinton St., Napanoch N.Y.
