Joseph Yung Sze Tso ELLENVILLE- Joe Tso, a resident of Ellenville since the early 1950’s, died peacefully on Dec. 9, 2014. Joe was born near Shanghai, China and came to the U.S. during World War II. He served as a Captain in the U.S. Army Air Corps and was awarded The Medal of Freedom by President Truman for his meritorious service during the war. After the war, Joe was the first foreign student to earn a Bachelors degree from the University of South Carolina, and later earned a Master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin. He then studied International Law at Columbia University where he met his wife, Lana. Joe and Lana moved to Ellenville where they owned and operated several businesses, including the Mt. Cathalia Ski Center. In 1979, Joe was admitted to the N.Y. Bar without having attended law school. Joe is survived by his loving wife Lana; his daughter, Cecilia and her husband Waide Warner; his son, Stanley and his wife Diane; his grandchildren, Ned and his wife Ashley, Sarah, Rebecca, Genna, Amanda, and Catherine; and his long-time friend Dwo Jon.
